The world's best selling Travel Guide Publication Lonely Planet listed Sumaging cave as one of the best Adventure Travel Destination in the World for 2009. The only Philippine entry.
Before reading whats in: you might want to know what happens before entering..PREPARATION.....
From the writer’s point of view, this is possibly the easiest, most accessible, and most popular cave in SAGADA.
Easy as it may seem, it won’t be for first timers, as it will involve butt scratching, thigh aching, body freezing, two hours grueling and exhausting hours, and my personal favorite, Guano (tasting) “este” Guano smelling and touching J.
Behind all these, is an achievement you will never forget, its something to be proud of. This will be a whole new adventure for you tourists out there.
Entering the cave, you must have a guide. They have reasonable prices for each tour package so please do not bargain, every cent you pay is worth the experience and services you get from the tour guides.
Entering the Sumaging cave (spelunking)
There are Three (3) stages that you would be taking when completing the whole course of Sumaging Cave .
- Stage One (1):
After the guides lit their lamps, you will be briefed for a moment, you will be starting your trip with a slippery trail, don’t complain why the trail is that slippery and hard, “hello” that is how it is, Welcome to Spelunking my friend.
You will be descending all your way going to stage two, passing through guano drop points, the pigpen, elephant heads and the Queen ( you’ll know why).
Stage 1: is all about effort and hard trails, not good viewing, but as they say, you won’t have the pleasure if you do not pass by hardships.
- Stage Two (2)
Some tourists, realizing they would be walking the same way they came would decide not to continue and back out. I feel sorry for them for.......
This stage is the pleasure side; you will be required to take those shoes or slippers off. Better do what the guide says; walking barefooted is best for you. The flow stone is like a sand paper when in contact with your feet. From there on you will see the turtle head, the king (you’ll know why) the chocolate cake and the curtain formation. The trail is not that hard and guides would assist you all the way.
- Stage three (3) (the tunnel)
Stage 1 is the hardships, stage 2 is pleasure, stage 3 is both.
You will be entering a small passage, have your selves soaked wet and passing through a horizontal slippery limestone rock assisted by a rope and the guide.
After the rope area, you will be submerged (chest level). Do not URINATE please……. Which I’m sure most of you readers who’ve been there already done it. Yeah! Yeah! SMILE J, I know its Quite tempting and that’s where the perfect opportunity was.
After the tunnel in the swimming pool, swim if you want and look around, you could find some fossilized sea shells embedded on rocks. Well, that is the end of the descent, going out would be all ascending. But don’t worry, you will not go through the tunnel passage again, there’s an easier way out.
From there on, back to stage two and one where the quano and slippery trail is found and do not PANIC if something dropped into your head. It might just be a dripping of water if not, it’s what you fear the most, you won’t turn into stone anyway! (ha!ha!ha!ha!). Besides, it might turn out to be a good luck. Imagine how many heads passed that area without guano hitting their head and its your head that got lucky. Hehehe
After you passed stage 1 going out, SPELUNKING is over, rejoice and be merry. But the hardship in not yet over for 245 ascending steps awaits you..
